Lessons From The Masters |
Lessons from the Tao Te Ching
Previously, I presented a translation of Chapter 10, out of order, because I wanted to share my favorite translation and favorite chapter. As stated previously, this chapter and translation captures the spirit of Qigong. I have yet to identify the translator. I hope you enjoy this encore chapter.
You can read more about the Tao Te Ching here.
Chapter 10 (partial, translator unknown)
"Can you calm your mind from its wandering
and sense the unity of the ONE?
Can you cultivate your life force and
sustain the flexibility of a newborn with no cares?
Can you refine your inner vision and
perceive the natural inner radiance of your eternal being?"

I would like to go over the finer points of this translation as they relate to Qigong. First, a very important part of Qigong is relaxation. A calm mind is key to relaxation. "ONE" refers to the Tao, but in Qigong we use the term Universal Energy or Universal Chi Field. Of course the goal of Qigong is to develop smooth Qi flow and increase the amount of Qi in the body. Qi is the life force. Flexibility means that we are not tight and rigid. It is difficult to relax if you are tight and rigid. Also, Qi does not flow smoothly through a body that is tight and rigid. Inner vision refers to visualization and imagination, both of which we use for guiding the Qi in the body. We use this internal vision to connect our energy body with the larger Chi Field. I hope you enjoy this translation. Meditating on these words will give you deep insights into the practice of Qigong.

The Benefits of Abdominal Breathing
I often talk about doing abdominal breathing during some Qigong practices, including exercise and meditation. It requires one to focus their mind on their breathing. We can characterize the desired breathing as: slow, long, thin, even and soft. So why is abdominal breathing so important? Here's a list of reasons why it is so important.

Qigong Practice |
Qigong Tip
Qigong is more than just a daily one hour practice. Qigong is a way of life. To get the full benefits of Qigong, incorporate it into other aspects of your life. Besides regular daily practice, you can focus on your breathing at the doctor's office or when you are in line at the bank. You can center your mind in your lower dantian for a few seconds just before you eat. You can smile into your whole body in the morning as soon as you wake up. What a great way to start the day. Practice being in the present moment (mindfulness) in whatever task you are doing, whether it is cooking, taking a shower or any other daily activity. Be creative.
