10 Tips for Healthy Living

10 Tips for Healthy Living

1. Eat whole and unprocessed food.
There’s a lot of talk in the diet communities about counting calories. Remember that not all calories are created equal. Processed foods are void of any nutritional substances. Then to make them taste better, salt, saturated fats, sugar, and other sweeteners are added. What’s more important is to eat whole unprocessed foods like vegetables, fruits, and grains. They are the source of nutrients that we need like vitamins, minerals, enzymes, and other phytochemicals. Your hunger will be satisfied with nutrients and your cravings for junk food will go away. This is a better approach to eating than the typical or Standard American Diet (SAD).

2. Drink purified water. Don’t drink tap water.
Recent studies have shown that there are all kinds of pharmaceutical drugs in our water supplies. One way this happens is by people flush medications down the toilet. Another way this happens is by throwing them in the trash. Then they end up in a landfill and they dissolve and are carried away by rain and end up in the water reservoirs. Also, pesticides and other pollutants in the air mix with the rain and they also end up in our reservoirs. The best approach is to drink purified water. Water distillation is best, followed by reverse osmosis filtration. It is worth the investment in your health and well-being to buy a good water purification system for your home. I have a small water distiller for my apartment. There are various sizes to meet everyone’s needs. And the water tastes much better than that out of the tap. You will notice the difference when you make the switch.

3. Get plenty of sleep.
It is best to get at least 7 hours of sleep daily. Children need more. Without adequate sleep, your body can become exhausted and your immune system can become compromised. Not only that but you can gain weight as a result of a lack of sleep. And you shouldn’t drive if you are tired. Drowsy driving is responsible for approximately 2.5% of fatal crashes according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. It is best to go to bed and get up at the same time every day.

4. Reduce or eliminate stress.
Stress is a major cause of illness. Chronic stress can weaken your immune system and digestive system. It can cause insomnia, nervousness, headaches, extreme emotions, fatigue, and many other health issues. You can reduce or eliminate the effects of stress by learning breathing and relaxation techniques, such as those taught as part of a qigong system. Exercise is another good way to fight stress. Eating healthy whole food is also important when handling unavoidable stressful events. Hypnotherapy is another effective way of managing stress.

5. Exercise regularly.
Recent studies have shown that living a sedentary life can take years off your life. Regular exercise is a good way to add years. I recommend mindful exercises like yoga, tai chi, and qigong. They energize you without causing you to be overly exerted and exhausted. Stretching is another beneficial exercise that will help keep muscles flexible. Weight-bearing exercises keep the muscles and bones strong.

6. Meditate regularly.
Meditation will help you to relax and focus your mind. With practice, it will help to lower blood pressure. Qigong meditation is especially good for relaxing the mind and increasing one’s energy level. Regular daily practice will yield the best results. Another effective meditation practice is to recite a mantra (positive phrase or saying) silently in your mind with your eyes closed.

7. Learn something new to maintain a healthy brain.
Learning new things on a regular basis causes the brain to make new neural connections. This helps to keep the mind active. You can learn a new hobby, exercise, take an art class, learn to play an instrument, and many more. Be creative. Invite a friend to join you.

8. Visit with friends and family regularly.
Being around loved ones is a great way to feel connected and appreciated. It also gives you the opportunity to help your family and friends. Then they will be there for you when you need help.

9. Be of service to others.
Being of service to others not only causes an increase in the feel-good hormones of the people you are helping and yourself but also to those that witness your generosity. There are lots of opportunities to get involved through local charity organizations. You can also donate money to a cause that means something to you and your family. Volunteering will be much appreciated at a local food bank or soup kitchen.

10. Have an open mind.
Let go of unnecessary fear and doubt. Open up your mind to new possibilities. Life is constantly changing for all of us. Accept the uncertainty and embrace new and unexpected circumstances with an open mind. Learn to tap into your intuition instead of immediately running your old fear based programming of “why me”. Life might just surprise you.

Qigong Saves The World

Qigong Saves The World - Inner Vitality QigongNow isn’t that a bold statement, “Qigong Saves The World”. Actually, the magic in Qigong isn’t really Qigong itself. The magic is in the people, those that practice Qigong. Qigong is just a way to access the latent power, Qi, in everyone.

It is by practicing Qigong that we can transform our world. At this time in our history, more and more people are awakening to the idea that we can co-create our own reality. That is not a cliché, but it is a fact backed by science.

We create our reality because we tap into the energy that surrounds us and flows through us. We control this energy either unconsciously or consciously with our mind. The truth is that the only thing about the world and life that needs saving is the unconscious way that humans find themselves living these days.

Just take a look around you then next time you walking down the street. You will likely see someone walking down the street and looking down at their cell phone instead of paying attention to what is going on around them. A lot of the time when I go to the park, I often see a child and a parent walking and the parent is paying more attention to their cell phone than the child. Cell phones are just one of the many distractions that keep us from being in the present moment.

By being unconscious, we become nothing but a bundle of nerves being stimulated and reacting without conscious control.  And if we have negative unconscious thoughts (which is typical), then we co-create a life that we don’t really want.

It is by living life each day consciously that we can make choices that direct the energy of life in balanced and beneficial ways. If you want to heal your body, then consciously focus your mind in the area of the body and visualize that you are healed. If you want to make more money, then you must start by consciously focusing your mind in the area of having more money.

So, with that said, Qigong saves the world, one practitioner at a time. Are you ready to help save the world from unconscious reactions and live in the present moment? If you answered yes, then it is time for you to take action.

Qigong for Self-Healing

Scenic Sun; Qigong

Introduction

Qigong is a general term for Chinese meditations and exercises that are used to improve and maintain good health and promote longevity. Qi (pronounced chee) refers to the life force or energy within all living things. Gong refers to one’s ability or skill. Thus, Qigong means Qi ability. A person that practices Qigong develops the ability to work with and improve their own Qi, thus improving their health. With regular and daily Qigong practice, you will learn techniques to relax both your body and your mind. Qigong practice will enhance your ability to focus your mind and improve your concentration. Thus, Qigong is truly a holistic approach to natural living and training both your mind and body.

Qigong focuses on self-healing and prevention of illness. It includes movement forms (stances and exercises) and quiet forms (breathing and meditations). Qigong helps the practitioner to focus their mind and to be in the present moment, which relaxes both the mind and the body. It is difficult to relax the body if the mind is not relaxed and quiet. Qigong also helps to strengthen and increase the energy (Qi) flow in the body. As a result, Qigong provides a strong foundation that supports the body’s own ability to heal.

Qi

The “Qi” part of Qigong refers to the universal energy or life force that is present in all living organisms. According to Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), disease occurs in the human body when Qi flow is disturbed (excess, deficient or blocked). The disruption of the Qi flow may manifest itself as symptoms (physical or emotional). Qi flows throughout the body in energy channels.

There are twelve major Jing channels (meridians) associated with the twelve organs (not necessarily the same as the physical organs of western anatomy) of the body. There are also eight Mai channels (vessels) that store and circulate Qi. Thus, improving Qi flow in the body literally means to improve the flow of Qi in the organs. The human body relies on the proper amount and flow of energy (Qi) for maintaining good health. Consistent practice of Qigong smooths out the Qi flow by opening energy channels in the body, increasing the stored energy in the body, and by circulating the energy through the channels. Thus, Qigong allows the practitioner to “Get Qi, Feel Qi, and Use Qi”.

Qi is depleted or blocked in many ways:

  1. Too much mental or physical stress.
  2. Poor eating and drinking habits.
  3. Too little or too much sleep.
  4. Extreme emotions (joy, sadness, anger).
  5. There are many, many other ways.

It’s important to eliminate or minimize these to have a successful Qigong practice and to be happy, healthy and in harmony.

Stress and tension restrict the flow of Qi in the body. When you feel stress or tension starting, take a 5-minute break and focus on your breathing. Breathe deeply into your abdomen. It will relax you and improve the Qi flow.

Qigong State

It is important to understand the concept of Qigong State for practicing Qigong (movement forms and quiet forms). Qigong State refers to putting your mind and body into the proper state for practicing Qigong. This means letting go of all thoughts about what has happened earlier in the day or what you want to do later. It means being present in the moment, the “here and now”. It means focusing your attention on relaxing both your mind and your body. It also means making sure that your spine is properly aligned while sitting or standing. Your feet should be flat on the floor unless you are sitting in the lotus position. Also, when in a Qigong state, you should put the tip of your tongue on the roof of your mouth behind your teeth as much as possible.

Daily Practice

Daily consistent practice is an important key to improving your health through Qigong. Without practice, you cannot strengthen your body and open your energy channels. Without practice,  you cannot quiet your mind and reduce stress. You should want and love to practice. If your practice becomes a chore, then you are likely doing it incorrectly. However, if life happens and you miss a practice, don’t beat yourself up. Don’t be hard on yourself. Learn from the circumstance and see if there is something you can do to reduce the likelihood that you will need to miss a practice in the future. Just do your best. But, always smile, forgive yourself, and just let it go.

Be grateful for your practices. Be grateful for your instructors. Be grateful for all of the Qigong masters that have paved the way for us to get the knowledge and instruction. Invite your friends and family to join you for your practices. Everyone benefits and it gives you an added incentive to practice consistently and you can support each other during times when you don’t feel like practicing.

Conclusion

As we have covered, the practice of Qigong means that we train to use Qi for self-healing. The practice of Qigong relaxes both the body and the mind. Thus, Qigong is a great way to reduce the effects of stress and improve your health. Qi flows through the energy channels in the body. The practice of Qigong helps us to “Get Qi, Feel Qi, and Use Qi”. Daily practice is important for constant improvement. Having gratitude for the practice and the Qigong masters help us to keep the momentum and desire to practice.

Relaxation

Relax in the mountains

One of the most important aspects you will learn as part of Qigong is relaxation. Relaxing is important to activate the body’s healing response. Relaxing means to let go of tension and stress that is held in the body. It also means to let go of tension and stress in the mind.

Relaxing the mind allows for a deeper state of relaxation to occur in the body. So what exactly does it mean to relax your mind? The human mind is typically busy thinking tens of thousands of thoughts each day, most of which are the same thoughts day after day. On top of that, people are stressed out from work, the bills, the kids, their health issues, their families, etc. If you are experiencing similar thoughts, you may find it difficult to turn these thoughts off. Some have difficulty sleeping because they can’t shut down the thoughts and worries.

If you learn Qigong, you will learn effective techniques to quiet your busy mind. Here are a few techniques. Close your eyes and concentrate on your breathing. Focus on each inhalation and exhalation. You can even count your breath cycles. Inhale, exhale, one, inhale, exhale, two, inhale, exhale, three, and continuing for five minutes or more. Another simple technique is to repeat a mantra. That is to repeat a word or phrase over and over again. The word or phrase can be as simple as “calm” or “calm, peace, relax” or it can be a complete sentence like: “I am calm, peaceful and relaxed in all situations”. Just make sure it is something positive and empowering. Keep in mind that your mind may wander, especially in the beginning. If this happens, just bring your awareness back to your technique (count, matra, etc). It is important to practice one of these techniques consistently one or more times each day. The more you practice, the quicker you will notice the results of focusing and calming your mind.

As you learn to calm and quiet your mind, you will begin to feel less stress. This is a sign your mind is relaxing. Now it will be much easier to relax your body. Now you can use a simple progressive relaxation technique to relax your body. You can start with your head; put your attention on your face and head. Imagine all tension releasing from your head. You can lightly tense your head and face and release. Feel the tension melting away. Repeat for your neck, shoulders, arms, hands, chest, back, abdomen, pelvis, legs, feet, etc. You can spend extra time in areas that do not release. Once you finish at your feet, repeat the entire process two more times. Practice this at least once a day, following a technique to calm and quiet your mind. It is important to find a quiet place for your practice where you won’t be interrupted. Sit in a comfortable chair. You can close your eyes, but don’t fall asleep. If you tend to fall asleep, then slightly open your eyes. These simple techniques are quite effective. There are many other techniques in Qigong for training the mind and body to relax. Seek out a teacher if you want more information.

Book Review “Relax Your Mind”

Relax Your Mind Book

I have written many times about how relaxation is an essential part of our Qigong daily practice.  In Qigong, when we talk about relaxation, we mean the relaxation of both the body and the mind. It is very difficult to relax your body if your mind is not relaxed. Once we master relaxing our mind, then relaxing the body comes easier.

Since relaxation is important when it comes to healing and preventing illness, I decided to write an entire book on the subject. It is basically a practical guide to “Relax Your Mind”. In my new book entitled “Relax Your Mind”, I describe simple and effective meditation techniques for relieving stress and relaxing or quieting a busy mind.

Have you ever been lying in bed and your mind was racing and you couldn’t stop it? And it prevented you from going to sleep? It happens to most people from time to time. Perhaps this has happened to you when you were trying to meditate. We get stressed out and overwhelmed and our mind can take over if we don’t understand how it works and how to train it to our advantage.

In “Relax Your Mind”, I cover stress and how it affects both the body and the mind. You will learn what a stress response is and how to stop it. You will also learn what a relaxation response is and how to induce one to relieve stress. I discuss how the mind and the subconscious mind work. I discuss simple techniques and practices for relaxing the mind, including living in the present moment, abdominal breathing, focusing the mind, calming the mind, and retraining the mind. I also go over visualization. And finally, I put the techniques together in a very specific sequence into a ten-minute relaxation meditation.

If you experience chronic stress and you find it difficult to tame your mind, then this book is a must-read for you. These are the same techniques that I use regularly to relax my mind. These techniques came about from my previous training and my own need to reduce stress and calm my mind. I have benefited tremendously from these simple techniques and I know you can benefit from them too.

The book is available ebook format (pdf, the pdf reader is free to download from Adobe, I will provide details on how to get it) initially. Also, there are some incredible bonuses like the audio version of the book (mp3 format), a “Relax Your Mind” workbook (also in pdf format), and other great bonuses. And I think you will be pleasantly surprised at the price considering all that you will get. I’m excited to bring this step-by-step information to help you along your life journey. Qigong is Empowering

Qigong is Empowering

There are various forms and purposes of Qigong. When you learn Qigong, you learn self-healing. That is powerful! Therefore, Qigong is empowering. It gives us the tools to take charge of our health and wellness. Qigong lowers stress, enhances relaxation and energy (Qi) circulation in the body and energy exchange with the Universe. By its very nature, Qigong enhances life itself. Yes, that is a bold statement, but it is very true. If you want to change your life for the better, then learn and practice Qigong daily.

Qigong is also a choice. It is the choices that we make that shapes our lives. We often make a lot of choices subconsciously. That is, without explicit and conscious effort, we just go through the motions of life, day after day. This means that we often forgo our ability to make choices. Choosing Qigong ultimately brings us to the present moment with conscious awareness. This give us additional opportunities to make conscious choices that can benefit our health and well-being. That is the power of Qigong. Everyone can experience it and everyone has the capacity for experiencing it. Now, though it is powerful, I didn’t say that it will magically wipe away all problems from your life. But what it can do is to give you another way to look at and deal with issues that show up in your life. It will expand your awareness. This is its greatest gift.

Qigong infuses healing wisdom into every cell of your being. When you become conscious and you learn how to connect to the Universal energy around you, all of your cells experience it just as your mind experiences it. Your mind and your attention is what makes Qigong powerful. As I have said before, “Healing starts in the mind”.  So now it’s your time to make a choice. If you want to be empowered, choose Qigong.

10 Tips To Reduce Stress

Reduce Stress

Here are ten tips to reduce stress.

1. Create a realistic plan for perceived stressful events ahead of time. Being prepared can take the edge off of stressful situations. For example, if you are doing some public speaking, either prepare an outline of your speech or write out your speech word for word. If you are traveling, print your itinerary ahead of time and leave plenty of time for rush-hour traffic.
2. Get plenty of rest. Getting enough sleep will allow you to be refreshed and focused on the situation at hand. Eight hours of sleep is optimal. If you have difficulty falling asleep, just count your breaths. This will calm your mind and you will be sleeping in no time.
3. Exercise regularly. Exercise is a great way to burn off stress-related hormones in the body. Exercise will also increase your energy and endurance, which will help you to handle physical stress more easily.
4. Participate in some mindful activity like Qigong, meditation, Yoga, Tai Chi or prayer. Mindful activities allow your mind to take a break from the mental chatter and stress. They will help you to focus your mind, which will allow you to handle stressful situations easier.
5. Eat healthy well-balanced meals daily. Never skip a meal. Skipping meals can lead to low blood sugar. It is difficult to deal with normal situations, let along stressful situations when your blood sugar is low. Low blood sugar can make you confused, moody and weak. Eating three regular healthy meals a day with some snacks in between is best.
6. Cut down or eliminate all refined foods and beverages. Stay with natural and whole foods with minimal processing. Foods that are processed typically have all of the nutrients stripped away. Then the manufactures add salt and fat to make them taste better. Don’t fall for this gimmick.
7. Engage in laughter as much as possible. Don’t take life too seriously. Take a break and do something fun now and then. Watch a comedy with family and friends. Laughter activates healing and feel-good hormones in the body. These counteract the effects of stress.
8. Spend time with loved ones. Doing things with loved ones always makes you feel connected and loved. Sharing little moments as well as big planned events. Let them know you care. This will reduce the effects of stress.
9. Breath deeply into the abdomen. Abdominal breathing relaxes and energizes the body. It also massages the internal organs. Do this routinely to relax and prevent the effects of stress from building up in the body and mind.
10. Don’t take on too many responsibilities. If you feel overwhelmed, say no. You must take care of yourself before you can take care of others. Learn to say no if you are already extended. Speaking your truth will keep you from running yourself into the ground. True loved ones and friends will respect you even more for being honest.
11. Here’s a bonus tip. In the words of Dr. Wayne Dyer, “Have a mind that is open to everything and attached nowhere.” Let go of all expectations and judgments and just live in the moment. If your mind doesn’t expect it to be stressful, then it won’t be. Normal stress is typically a product of an overactive imagination based on fear. Let go and let God, as the saying goes.
