5 Mindfulness Practices For Living In The Present Moment

Mindfulness practices: observe your thoughts, abdominal breathing, walking in the park, Tai Chi, and Qigong.

Mindfulness practices are practices that allow us to focus our attention in the present moment, which is great for relieving stress. To be in the present moment, you must let go of things from your past. Learn from things in your past and let them go. Forgive everyone that has hurt you in the past. That doesn’t mean you condone or allow yourself to be hurt by others. It just means that you accept what has happened and you are ready to move on with your life.

Also, to be in the present moment, you must let go of worry about what will happen in the future. The fear of the unknown can paralyze you and keep you from living in the present moment. Here are five powerful mindfulness practices that can have a profound effect on your life.

1. Observe Your Thoughts

Life is often so busy and hectic that we become unconscious to all of the thoughts that we think every day. As reported by the National Science Foundation, we have about 60,000 thoughts per day and about 80% of thoughts are negative. When we live most of our lives unconsciously,  then we give up the power of conscious choices. It is our conscious choices that give us the power of changing our thoughts to be more positive.

One simple mindfulness practice is to observe your thoughts without judgment. Just notice what thoughts you are having at any given moment. You may catch yourself being negative. Just accept it and don’t try to force your thoughts to be a certain way. Just observe and accept. Don’t judge yourself. Don’t criticize yourself. The conscious act of observing your thoughts without judgment has the power to change your unconscious thoughts over time.

2. Abdominal Breathing

Focusing your mind on your breathing in the present moment is a powerful mindfulness practice. It can reduce or stop a stress response and it can induce a relaxation response. Abdominal breathing is performed by slowly inhaling deeply into the abdomen and allowing your abdomen to move outward. Then as you slowly exhale, allow your abdomen to move inward. You can count your breath cycle. Inhale, exhale, 1. Inhale, exhale, 2. Repeat this practice for 5 to 10 minutes to start. If you lose your concentration and forget your count, just return your focus to your breathing and start from 1.

3. Walking in the Park

Walking in the park is not only a great way to connect with nature, but it is also a great way to be in the present moment. It can be considered a walking mindful meditation. Feel the warm breeze on your face. Notice the living animals and insects that cross your path. Here the buzz of the bees as they fly by. Connect with nature with all of your senses.

4. Tai Chi

Tai Chi has been called meditation in motion. It is a great exercise that can help your balance. It can induce a relaxation response. You become the movement rather than thinking about the movement. Feel the energy flowing through your body. You practice Tai Chi in the present moment.

5. Qigong

Qigong can have both exercise or movement and sitting meditation. Both are great mindfulness practices. Qigong is a great way to balance the mind and the body. As you practice in the present moment, you relax into the practice. You open the energy channels in the body.

It is important to understand that no matter which mindfulness practice resonates with you, the key to achieving the most benefits is a consistent daily practice. There is no substitute for practicing.

Living Qigong

Meditate in the Moonlight - Living Qigong

Living Qigong 24 hours a day depends on our mind power. So, in the beginning, we train our minds to release stress and relax. Relaxation is one of the most important aspects of Qigong living. Stress restricts the flow of Qi. Relaxation allows the Qi to flow smoothly.

Living Qigong is not about being perfect. It’s about doing your best. If you have an “off” day, accept it as a learning opportunity, try again, make an adjustment, stay calm, and positive. It is a chance to dive deeper into your understanding of your life. Ask yourself quality questions when you are having an “off” day. For example, what can I do differently to achieve a more beneficial outcome? Or, you can restate your situation and focus on what you do want. For example, what I desire is to handle this situation calmly and positively.

The practice of Qigong is not just limited to the times when we practice the exercises and meditations. Qigong is really the practice of life. Qigong is an expression of life. Thus, Qigong is a way of life.

If you live Qigong, then when you wake in the morning, you take a deep breath, put a smile on your face, and you center your mind in the present moment. Throughout your day, you send positive energy in the form of thoughts to all life forms around you. You send blessings of gratitude to life itself.

When you eat, you focus only on eating the food. You focus on how the food tastes. Feel the presences of the food in your mouth. Look at the colors and textures of the food. Smell the aroma of the food. Breathe deeply while you eat. Chew slowly and appreciate the moment.

When you wash the dishes, you focus only on washing the dishes. Feel the warmth of the water on your hands. Feel how smooth the soap feels. Smell the scent of the soap. Wipe the front side of the plate. Notice the pattern in the front of the plate. When you wipe the back side of the plate, just focus on the back side. Don’t worry about the front side. Don’t worry about how many dishes you have to wash. Focus on each dish, one at a time. Breathe deeply while you wash the dishes.

Sleeping is another practice of Qigong. Before sleeping, you prepare your mind and body for sleep. Your mind is calm and centered for sleep. Sleep is the yin balance to being awake. You seek to balance all aspects of your life. Deep breathing before and while in bed will calm your mind. I also recommend thinking about five things you are grateful for from your day. Before sleep, if there is something weighing on your mind, write it down with a short list of possible actions you can take. This will allow you to be at peace knowing that you have solutions and you won’t forget them.

You seek to bring Yin and Yang balance to your life and surroundings. You let go of the past. You let go of judgments. You let go of any expectations. You let go of any resistance. You live every moment consciously. You live in the present moment. You enjoy quiet and peaceful times more deeply. You enjoy active and changing times more deeply.

You allow the flow of Qi and life to be smooth. As your Qigong practice opens the energy channels in your body, it allows the Qi to flow more smoothly in your body. When Qi is flowing more smoothly, your health improves, your mind relaxes more deeply, and your emotions become balanced. As a result, it also allows the Qi flow of your life to be more smooth. You handle the unexpected changes in life more easily. You handle difficult situations more easily. More things become easy and fewer things seem difficult.

As you practice Qigong, you learn that before you can help others, that you must help yourself first. By taking the self-less action to heal yourself, you put yourself in a better position to help others.

With increased emotional stability, your relationships come into balance. When communing with others, you extend positive and compassionate thoughts. Just as the Qi Field extends and encompasses everyone and everything, you recognize that others are not only connected to you but are an extension of you. You recognize that as you treat others with love and kindness, you treat yourself with love and kindness.  You also know that if you treat yourself with negativity, that indirectly you are extending negativity to others.

So, as a practitioner of Qigong, your practice extends way beyond the exercises and meditation. It becomes the way you live your life. So if you are ready to embrace a life of Qi, a life of Qigong, then start right where you are. There is no time like the present to begin. After all, Qi is everywhere. You can’t escape Qi, it is inside of you. It is all around you. So why not learn to master yourself and Qi through the life practice of Qigong. Qigong is a great way to master your life.

Living with Change

Planet Earth - Inner Vitality QigongLife is constantly changing. So it is important to live from a place of center and balance. We often look at change as difficult or stressful. Fear of change often takes us on a detour in life that is not desired and is avoidable if we just accept it as a journey of self-discovery.

Resistance just gives more power to the change we prejudged as difficult and unwanted. Resistance is a sign that we are acting out of fear. Change requires flexibility. Rigidity is a sign of death. If we hold the things in our lives too tightly and try to force things to stay the same, we stifle the very life force that permits life. Change is the inherent nature of life itself. Without change, there would be no life.

Living with change and uncertainty requires knowing yourself, trusting yourself, living from intuition and having faith in God, the Universe, the Chi Field. When we learn how to live in the present moment and stop resisting the truth, we begin to align ourselves with our higher purpose and connect to our higher self.

Acceptance is key to living with change. Accept your circumstance without resistance and judgment. Have an open mind without attachments to the outcome. Then make an adjustment if you don’t get the outcomes that you desire.

Qigong Saves The World

Qigong Saves The World - Inner Vitality QigongNow isn’t that a bold statement, “Qigong Saves The World”. Actually, the magic in Qigong isn’t really Qigong itself. The magic is in the people, those that practice Qigong. Qigong is just a way to access the latent power, Qi, in everyone.

It is by practicing Qigong that we can transform our world. At this time in our history, more and more people are awakening to the idea that we can co-create our own reality. That is not a cliché, but it is a fact backed by science.

We create our reality because we tap into the energy that surrounds us and flows through us. We control this energy either unconsciously or consciously with our mind. The truth is that the only thing about the world and life that needs saving is the unconscious way that humans find themselves living these days.

Just take a look around you then next time you walking down the street. You will likely see someone walking down the street and looking down at their cell phone instead of paying attention to what is going on around them. A lot of the time when I go to the park, I often see a child and a parent walking and the parent is paying more attention to their cell phone than the child. Cell phones are just one of the many distractions that keep us from being in the present moment.

By being unconscious, we become nothing but a bundle of nerves being stimulated and reacting without conscious control.  And if we have negative unconscious thoughts (which is typical), then we co-create a life that we don’t really want.

It is by living life each day consciously that we can make choices that direct the energy of life in balanced and beneficial ways. If you want to heal your body, then consciously focus your mind in the area of the body and visualize that you are healed. If you want to make more money, then you must start by consciously focusing your mind in the area of having more money.

So, with that said, Qigong saves the world, one practitioner at a time. Are you ready to help save the world from unconscious reactions and live in the present moment? If you answered yes, then it is time for you to take action.

Change is the Only Constant

Change is inevitable. Change is the only constant in the universe. There will always be change because that is the nature of the universe. Change is the nature of life itself. The universe is expanding, hence changing. The earth revolves around the sun, thus constantly moving and changing. It is the nature of the atom. It is the nature of the stars. It is also the nature of humanity.

Human beings are always changing. We are born. We grow up. We grow old. We die. Did I say the “d” word? Yes, we will eventually die. It is the cycle of life. It is a fact. So, we must live with this reality.

We get so caught up in being comfortable and wanting things to stay the same that we resist change at all costs. We fear change because we fear the unknown. Guess what? The more we fear and resist change the more painful the change will be. We cannot avoid change. We are changing. We cannot resist something that is part of our core being.

It is only when we accept the fact that change is inevitable we will begin to live our best life. We must embrace change and live in the present moment. Let go of what might happen in the future. Fear only limits our potential. Look at change as another opportunity to expand your conscious awareness of life.

If we stop putting our energy into fearing and resisting change, where do we spend our time and energy? How about calming our minds and building our internal energy? How about being of service to others? How about doing something that we are passionate about? How about mastering our body? How about traveling to a country we haven’t been before? How about learning a language? How about learning Tai Chi? How about learning Qigong?

Imagine the possibilities when we just let go and embrace change. We don’t often know what is around the corner. Is it necessary to know what is around the corner? If we knew everything that was going to happen, then there would be no mystery in life. Life would quickly become boring. We can live with the mysteries of life. We can learn to trust ourselves and trust our intuition. That is how we can live with the mysteries and not know what every outcome will be.

It is your intuition that gives you a tingling sensation that you are in danger and you should go a different direction. It is your intuition that tells you that someone will call minutes before they actually do. It is your intuition that gives you the answer to a problem while you sleep. It is by trusting in your true self, that you learn to live in the present moment with change.  You can’t avoid taxes and you can’t avoid change. Embrace change and see how rich your life will be.

The Power of the Present Moment

Present Moment

Do you ever find yourself worrying about something that might happen in the future? Do you ever find yourself going over a past experience and you just couldn’t get it out of your mind? If you answered yes to either of these questions, then you are not living in the present moment. The present moment is the only moment we ever have. You cannot live in the future or the past. But you can waste your present moments being stuck in thoughts about the future or the past.

The power of the present moment is that it releases your mind from worry and stress. Therefore, it shuts down the stress response in your body. If you just focus on the present moment, you will induce a relaxation response. Then you will unlock the openness and creativity of your mind.

If you want to live in the present moment, then you must be accepting of what is right now. You don’t have to like what is happening now, but you must accept it. Often times people find much pain in their present moments and they try to escape through numbing with alcohol, drugs, food, and other things that eventually lead to an addiction.

Breathing is a great way to root yourself in the present moment. First, put your mind in your body and on your breathing. Then, breathe deeply and slowly into your abdomen. Focus your mind on your breathing and nothing else. If you find your mind wandering, just accept the reality and return your focus back to your breathing. If you find it difficult, you can count your breath cycles. For example, inhale, exhale, 1. Inhale, exhale, 2. Inhale, exhale, 3. Continue to count your breath cycles for five minutes or longer.

Be open to the things in your present moment without judging them, even if they make you uncomfortable. When we judge things in our present moment as good or bad, we place restrictions on our experiences. Then, we may begin to allow our fears and emotions to take over our present moments. Living in the present moment may not be easy, but it is worth the effort and the power it brings to your life.
