Living Qigong

Meditate in the Moonlight - Living Qigong

Living Qigong 24 hours a day depends on our mind power. So, in the beginning, we train our minds to release stress and relax. Relaxation is one of the most important aspects of Qigong living. Stress restricts the flow of Qi. Relaxation allows the Qi to flow smoothly.

Living Qigong is not about being perfect. It’s about doing your best. If you have an “off” day, accept it as a learning opportunity, try again, make an adjustment, stay calm, and positive. It is a chance to dive deeper into your understanding of your life. Ask yourself quality questions when you are having an “off” day. For example, what can I do differently to achieve a more beneficial outcome? Or, you can restate your situation and focus on what you do want. For example, what I desire is to handle this situation calmly and positively.

The practice of Qigong is not just limited to the times when we practice the exercises and meditations. Qigong is really the practice of life. Qigong is an expression of life. Thus, Qigong is a way of life.

If you live Qigong, then when you wake in the morning, you take a deep breath, put a smile on your face, and you center your mind in the present moment. Throughout your day, you send positive energy in the form of thoughts to all life forms around you. You send blessings of gratitude to life itself.

When you eat, you focus only on eating the food. You focus on how the food tastes. Feel the presences of the food in your mouth. Look at the colors and textures of the food. Smell the aroma of the food. Breathe deeply while you eat. Chew slowly and appreciate the moment.

When you wash the dishes, you focus only on washing the dishes. Feel the warmth of the water on your hands. Feel how smooth the soap feels. Smell the scent of the soap. Wipe the front side of the plate. Notice the pattern in the front of the plate. When you wipe the back side of the plate, just focus on the back side. Don’t worry about the front side. Don’t worry about how many dishes you have to wash. Focus on each dish, one at a time. Breathe deeply while you wash the dishes.

Sleeping is another practice of Qigong. Before sleeping, you prepare your mind and body for sleep. Your mind is calm and centered for sleep. Sleep is the yin balance to being awake. You seek to balance all aspects of your life. Deep breathing before and while in bed will calm your mind. I also recommend thinking about five things you are grateful for from your day. Before sleep, if there is something weighing on your mind, write it down with a short list of possible actions you can take. This will allow you to be at peace knowing that you have solutions and you won’t forget them.

You seek to bring Yin and Yang balance to your life and surroundings. You let go of the past. You let go of judgments. You let go of any expectations. You let go of any resistance. You live every moment consciously. You live in the present moment. You enjoy quiet and peaceful times more deeply. You enjoy active and changing times more deeply.

You allow the flow of Qi and life to be smooth. As your Qigong practice opens the energy channels in your body, it allows the Qi to flow more smoothly in your body. When Qi is flowing more smoothly, your health improves, your mind relaxes more deeply, and your emotions become balanced. As a result, it also allows the Qi flow of your life to be more smooth. You handle the unexpected changes in life more easily. You handle difficult situations more easily. More things become easy and fewer things seem difficult.

As you practice Qigong, you learn that before you can help others, that you must help yourself first. By taking the self-less action to heal yourself, you put yourself in a better position to help others.

With increased emotional stability, your relationships come into balance. When communing with others, you extend positive and compassionate thoughts. Just as the Qi Field extends and encompasses everyone and everything, you recognize that others are not only connected to you but are an extension of you. You recognize that as you treat others with love and kindness, you treat yourself with love and kindness.  You also know that if you treat yourself with negativity, that indirectly you are extending negativity to others.

So, as a practitioner of Qigong, your practice extends way beyond the exercises and meditation. It becomes the way you live your life. So if you are ready to embrace a life of Qi, a life of Qigong, then start right where you are. There is no time like the present to begin. After all, Qi is everywhere. You can’t escape Qi, it is inside of you. It is all around you. So why not learn to master yourself and Qi through the life practice of Qigong. Qigong is a great way to master your life.

Qigong Saves The World

Qigong Saves The World - Inner Vitality QigongNow isn’t that a bold statement, “Qigong Saves The World”. Actually, the magic in Qigong isn’t really Qigong itself. The magic is in the people, those that practice Qigong. Qigong is just a way to access the latent power, Qi, in everyone.

It is by practicing Qigong that we can transform our world. At this time in our history, more and more people are awakening to the idea that we can co-create our own reality. That is not a cliché, but it is a fact backed by science.

We create our reality because we tap into the energy that surrounds us and flows through us. We control this energy either unconsciously or consciously with our mind. The truth is that the only thing about the world and life that needs saving is the unconscious way that humans find themselves living these days.

Just take a look around you then next time you walking down the street. You will likely see someone walking down the street and looking down at their cell phone instead of paying attention to what is going on around them. A lot of the time when I go to the park, I often see a child and a parent walking and the parent is paying more attention to their cell phone than the child. Cell phones are just one of the many distractions that keep us from being in the present moment.

By being unconscious, we become nothing but a bundle of nerves being stimulated and reacting without conscious control.  And if we have negative unconscious thoughts (which is typical), then we co-create a life that we don’t really want.

It is by living life each day consciously that we can make choices that direct the energy of life in balanced and beneficial ways. If you want to heal your body, then consciously focus your mind in the area of the body and visualize that you are healed. If you want to make more money, then you must start by consciously focusing your mind in the area of having more money.

So, with that said, Qigong saves the world, one practitioner at a time. Are you ready to help save the world from unconscious reactions and live in the present moment? If you answered yes, then it is time for you to take action.

You can begin by taking our Beginning Qigong Meditation home study kit. It will teach you simple and effective Qigong meditation techniques to relax, be in the present moment, increase your energy level, and so much more. Qigong for Self-Healing

Scenic Sun; Qigong

Introduction

Qigong is a general term for Chinese meditations and exercises that are used to improve and maintain good health and promote longevity. Qi (pronounced chee) refers to the life force or energy within all living things. Gong refers to one’s ability or skill. Thus, Qigong means Qi ability. A person that practices Qigong develops the ability to work with and improve their own Qi, thus improving their health. With regular and daily Qigong practice, you will learn techniques to relax both your body and your mind. Qigong practice will enhance your ability to focus your mind and improve your concentration. Thus, Qigong is truly a holistic approach to natural living and training both your mind and body.

Qigong focuses on self-healing and prevention of illness. It includes movement forms (stances and exercises) and quiet forms (breathing and meditations). Qigong helps the practitioner to focus their mind and to be in the present moment, which relaxes both the mind and the body. It is difficult to relax the body if the mind is not relaxed and quiet. Qigong also helps to strengthen and increase the energy (Qi) flow in the body. As a result, Qigong provides a strong foundation that supports the body’s own ability to heal.

Qi

The “Qi” part of Qigong refers to the universal energy or life force that is present in all living organisms. According to Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), disease occurs in the human body when Qi flow is disturbed (excess, deficient or blocked). The disruption of the Qi flow may manifest itself as symptoms (physical or emotional). Qi flows throughout the body in energy channels.

There are twelve major Jing channels (meridians) associated with the twelve organs (not necessarily the same as the physical organs of western anatomy) of the body. There are also eight Mai channels (vessels) that store and circulate Qi. Thus, improving Qi flow in the body literally means to improve the flow of Qi in the organs. The human body relies on the proper amount and flow of energy (Qi) for maintaining good health. Consistent practice of Qigong smooths out the Qi flow by opening energy channels in the body, increasing the stored energy in the body, and by circulating the energy through the channels. Thus, Qigong allows the practitioner to “Get Qi, Feel Qi, and Use Qi”.

Qi is depleted or blocked in many ways:

  1. Too much mental or physical stress.
  2. Poor eating and drinking habits.
  3. Too little or too much sleep.
  4. Extreme emotions (joy, sadness, anger).
  5. There are many, many other ways.

It’s important to eliminate or minimize these to have a successful Qigong practice and to be happy, healthy and in harmony.

Stress and tension restrict the flow of Qi in the body. When you feel stress or tension starting, take a 5-minute break and focus on your breathing. Breathe deeply into your abdomen. It will relax you and improve the Qi flow.

Qigong State

It is important to understand the concept of Qigong State for practicing Qigong (movement forms and quiet forms). Qigong State refers to putting your mind and body into the proper state for practicing Qigong. This means letting go of all thoughts about what has happened earlier in the day or what you want to do later. It means being present in the moment, the “here and now”. It means focusing your attention on relaxing both your mind and your body. It also means making sure that your spine is properly aligned while sitting or standing. Your feet should be flat on the floor unless you are sitting in the lotus position. Also, when in a Qigong state, you should put the tip of your tongue on the roof of your mouth behind your teeth as much as possible.

Daily Practice

Daily consistent practice is an important key to improving your health through Qigong. Without practice, you cannot strengthen your body and open your energy channels. Without practice,  you cannot quiet your mind and reduce stress. You should want and love to practice. If your practice becomes a chore, then you are likely doing it incorrectly. However, if life happens and you miss a practice, don’t beat yourself up. Don’t be hard on yourself. Learn from the circumstance and see if there is something you can do to reduce the likelihood that you will need to miss a practice in the future. Just do your best. But, always smile, forgive yourself, and just let it go.

Be grateful for your practices. Be grateful for your instructors. Be grateful for all of the Qigong masters that have paved the way for us to get the knowledge and instruction. Invite your friends and family to join you for your practices. Everyone benefits and it gives you an added incentive to practice consistently and you can support each other during times when you don’t feel like practicing.

Conclusion

As we have covered, the practice of Qigong means that we train to use Qi for self-healing. The practice of Qigong relaxes both the body and the mind. Thus, Qigong is a great way to reduce the effects of stress and improve your health. Qi flows through the energy channels in the body. The practice of Qigong helps us to “Get Qi, Feel Qi, and Use Qi”. Daily practice is important for constant improvement. Having gratitude for the practice and the Qigong masters help us to keep the momentum and desire to practice.

Healing Starts In The Mind

Healing Starts In The Mind

If you want to heal your body, remember, healing starts in the mind. It starts with the thoughts and mental pictures you have about your circumstance. It is important to have positive thoughts about your ability to heal. Let go of the victim mentality. You have the power within you to change your circumstance. Let go of the story you keep telling yourself. The stories you tell yourself can feed your situation, giving more energy to the situation you don’t want. You have the power of choice. You can choose a new story. You can change the thought patterns that keep you stuck in your situation. As described by Dr. Wayne Dyer in his book “10 Secrets To Success and Inner Peace”, one of his secrets is “Give up your personal history”. He explains that if you give up your personal history, then you don’t have to live up to it. This personal history is the story you are telling yourself and others.

Qigong teaches us to bring our conscious waking awareness to our situation. Through Qigong, we not only learn to be conscious of our situation but learn to live in the present. It teaches us to let go of the negative thoughts and imagery about what might be, what always was, why it won’t work, why I can’t heal. These stories are not beneficial to our healing. So you may be asking, What can I do to change my situation? How can I do it? You can do it, starting with the choices you make. Choose to have positive and loving thoughts and mental pictures of yourself. Open your heart and forgive yourself for getting into the situation. Stop blaming others. Accept your situation as it is, even if it isn’t your fault. If you resist healing, it will only give more power to your lack of healing. Once you accept your situation and see the truth about where you are right now, then you can focus your thoughts and pictures on what you do want.

So now that you have opened your heart and let go of your story and negative thoughts, what’s next. First, you must believe and trust that you have the capacity for healing. Everyone does. If you cut yourself, the body instantly begins the process of healing the wound. This is true about all aspects of your life, once you know and trust in your ability to heal. Once you trust in your ability to heal, you let go of the stress of healing and your body begins to relax. This is an important key to the success of Qigong. Qigong teaches us to relax.

Here’s another important key to healing. Your mind can’t heal your body if it isn’t in your body. So you must focus your mind on the areas of your body that are in need of healing. The mind is most powerful when you activate your power of visualization. You may have heard the phrase, “Words have power”. Well, your mind’s pictures, real or imaginary, are even more powerful than your words. You can visualize the healing you want. You can visualize the energy flowing in the area. You can visualize the perfect condition as if the healing has already happened. If you have a pain in your knee, then visualize the energy going to the knee and surrounding the knee, penetrating deep into every cell of the knee. Imagine the feeling that the healing will bring; strength, warmth, tingling, relaxed. You can imagine the energy as either a white light or a golden light. As explained by my Qigong teacher, Qigong Grandmaster Tianyou Hao, “The mind leads the Qi, the Qi follows the mind.” This is a very important lesson that we learn from Qigong. But it only works if you focus your mind’s attention in the body. It also requires consistent practice and patience.

Another way to focus your mind in the body is to send a loving smile into the affected area. Send love to the area that needs healing. This also works for mental/emotional issues (not clinical conditions). Visualize the smile bringing love to the area of your life that is bothering you. If you are struggling with a loved one, visualize yourself smiling at them, even if you can’t do it in person. This will have a profound effect on the healing of the relationship. Trust in your ability to heal.

And finally, know that we are all connected. So when you heal yourself, you also contribute to the collective healing of everyone. Some people sacrifice themselves, their health, their time, and their dreams to help others. But this is a very selfish idea. No one benefits. If you really want to help others, then you must heal yourself first. So the next time someone you love needs healing, dedicate your Qigong practice and healing to that person. Better yet, ask them to join your practice. Practice together.

It is best to practice being positive, visualizing and sending a smile and love to yourself when there is no reason and no issues. Practice this every day. Then, if something happens, like an injury or illness, or another life struggle, then you already know what to do. Put your mind’s attention on the situation or area, smile to the area, send love to the area. Visualize the gold white light surrounding the area, nourishing the area, and loving the area (could also be a person or situation, the same visualization can be used). Remember that you can heal. Healing starts in the mind.

Intentions Form Chi Fields

Chi Field

Hurricane Sandy has affected a lot of people on the east coast. The destruction is tremendous. Our hearts and prayers go out to all affected. With that said, staying stuck in the destruction and repeating the sorrows and regrets will not help anyone, including yourself. You may be thinking that is the compassionate way, to extend feelings of sadness to those affected by “bad” events. However, this type of support does not provide any power or help to those affected. Providing negative thoughts and intentions only contribute to building a negative pattern or field of energy that not only weakens yourself but also weakens others.

In Qigong, thoughts good or bad directed towards a common intention create energetic patterns that form what is called a Chi (Qi) Field of the intention. These energy patterns can either strengthen you or weaken you. So extending any sentiment that has a negative tone will actually immediately weaken the muscles in your body. And not just your body, but those around you and ultimately everyone in the Universal Chi Field, which encompasses everything. And extending any thoughts or words that have a positive tone will actually strengthen the muscles in your body. This has been proven through the field of Kinesiology. Kinesiology is also known as muscle testing. While holding one arm out to the side, if you think a negative thought or a false thought, your arm will be weakened and will be difficult to resist if someone pushes down on your arm. And if you think something positive or empowering, your arm will be strong and it will be easier to resist as someone pushes down on your arm. There is a great body of research by a medical doctor, Dr. David Hawkins, that has proven this. He has described his research in his book, “Power vs Force”.

So now you may be asking, how should I respond to those going through, what they view as, a difficult time? Since visualization is powerful, first get a picture in your mind of the person doing well or having an empowered outcome. There is a Chinese word “Haola” (pronounced, how la) that means “All is well and so be it”. It is a word of not just wishing a person well, but transforming any situation to wellness. It is more than just a statement, but it is an intention, backed by millions of people that know of its meaning and use this intention daily. It has a powerful Chi Field that, when expressed, will strengthen you and others around you. So you can greet the person with Haola. It is like extending a powerful blessing to the person that can literally change their situation in a positive way and strengthen them. You can also extend Haola in silence. I learned about Haola from Qigong Master Mingtong Gu of the Zhineng (Wisdom Healing) Qigong tradition. As Master Gu often recommends, you can dedicate your own daily Qigong practice to the healing or the positive benefit of those going through difficult circumstances. Haola!, Haola!, Hoala!

Living In Balance

Living in Balance

Wokandapix / Pixabay

From a Qigong point of view, illness can occur in the body when there are energetic imbalances. When Qi (energy) is either stagnant, blocked or weak, illness may follow if the imbalance is not corrected. Practicing Qigong can help to balance and restore proper energy flow. There are many reasons for getting out of balance. Here’s a few: improper diet, improper breathing, not enough rest, too much exercise, strong emotions, etc. Anything that is excessive can lead to imbalance.

One way to understand balance and imbalance is to study the science of Yin and Yang. Yin is a characteristic that is feminine, dark, cold, inside, mental, etc. Yang is a characteristic that is masculine, light, hot, outside, physical, etc. The best way to balance your health and life is to balance Yin and Yang. If you sit too much (too yin), then you can find balance by doing more exercise (yang). When you are too mental (yin), then being more physical (yang) will help you become more balanced. If you are physically exhausted from exercising too much, then you will benefit from much rest (yin).

Qigong brings balance when movement forms (exercises) are balanced with quiet forms (breathing and meditation). Movement forms help to open energy channels and detoxify the body and restore proper energy flow. Quiet forms relax (yin) both the mind and body allowing the body to release tension (yang). Both of which allow the energy of the body to flow more freely. Both movement forms and quiet forms help to build energy in the body, improving the condition of energy depletion or exhaustion. As demonstrated by the following symbol

Yin Yang Symbol

referred to as the Yin/Yang Symbol, Yin and Yang are opposites that when balanced, live in harmony. The parts in black represent Yin and the parts in white represent Yang. The nature of Yin and Yang is to seek balance. Thus, if there is too much Yang, Yin will emerge to balance the Yang. If there is too much Yin, then Yang will emerge to balance the Yin. Thus as shown by the symbol, there is always a little Yin, in Yang and there is always a little Yang, in Yin. An example of this is that if there is a physical injury (yang), the body automatically increases blood flow (liquid is yin) to bring about healing and restore balance. By practicing Qigong on a daily basis, you will bring more energetic balance to your body and as a result, improved health.

Unseen Force

Tree Qi Field

Yuri_B / Pixabay

There are unseen forces all around us. There is gravity, electric, magnetic, and nuclear forces to name a few. We experience these in everything we do. Can you imagine what would happen if gravity was suspended? We would just fly off the planet. Whoosh! There we go floating in space. There would be nothing to anchor us to planet Earth. This is an essential force needed for life. Wouldn’t you say?

Qi (pronounced chee) is an unseen life force that is not very well-known. Actually, it is more than just a life force. It is the force behind all hidden forces of nature. Nothing exists without Qi. There are many dimensions to Qi. Qi is basically the so-called “unified field” theory that is considered the “holy grail” of physics. Modern Physics, at this point in history, has failed to characterize or quantify this theory.

Qi has been known to humankind for thousands of years. The earliest known writing (2nd century BCE) that describes the flow of Qi in the pathways in the body is called the “Huangdi Neijing” or “The Yellow Emperor’s Classic of Medicine”. [1] Modern Physics is still trying to catch up to this ancient technology.

The key to life is having a smooth and balanced movement of Qi in the body and having a balanced exchange of Qi with your surroundings (the Universe). When the flow or movement of Qi is restricted or blocked, illness or disease takes over in the body.

So, the key to prevent illness and disease is by doing practices that enhance the Qi flow in the body and with the environment. Thus, practices that relax body and mind, strengthen the body, and open energy channels in the body will help to prevent illness and disease. Mindfulness practices like Qigong, Tai Chi, Yoga, and Meditation are good places to start if you want to prevent illness and disease. They help you to tap into the unseen forces in and around the body to bring balance and harmony to your energy system.

Now it’s up to you to make a choice. You can choose to harness the “unseen forces” in your life or you can choose to do nothing and risk becoming sick. Now I can’t guarantee that if you do engage in mindfulness practices that you won’t get sick. We are human and not perfect. However, I can tell you that mindfulness practices will give you a foundation from which you can deal with difficult times in a more structured and beneficial way. I hope you choose to take a closer look at this “unseen force”, known as Qi, in your life.

Qigong is Empowering

Qigong is Empowering

There are various forms and purposes of Qigong. When you learn Qigong, you learn self-healing. That is powerful! Therefore, Qigong is empowering. It gives us the tools to take charge of our health and wellness. Qigong lowers stress, enhances relaxation and energy (Qi) circulation in the body and energy exchange with the Universe. By its very nature, Qigong enhances life itself. Yes, that is a bold statement, but it is very true. If you want to change your life for the better, then learn and practice Qigong daily.

Qigong is also a choice. It is the choices that we make that shapes our lives. We often make a lot of choices subconsciously. That is, without explicit and conscious effort, we just go through the motions of life, day after day. This means that we often forgo our ability to make choices. Choosing Qigong ultimately brings us to the present moment with conscious awareness. This give us additional opportunities to make conscious choices that can benefit our health and well-being. That is the power of Qigong. Everyone can experience it and everyone has the capacity for experiencing it. Now, though it is powerful, I didn’t say that it will magically wipe away all problems from your life. But what it can do is to give you another way to look at and deal with issues that show up in your life. It will expand your awareness. This is its greatest gift.

Qigong infuses healing wisdom into every cell of your being. When you become conscious and you learn how to connect to the Universal energy around you, all of your cells experience it just as your mind experiences it. Your mind and your attention is what makes Qigong powerful. As I have said before, “Healing starts in the mind”.  So now it’s your time to make a choice. If you want to be empowered, choose Qigong.

Qigong Benefits

If you are wonder what the benefits are for practicing Qigong, then you have come to the right place. Did you know that there are studies that suggest that between 70-90% of doctor’s visits are stress related [1]. If that is true, then stress is an epidemic. Stress causes many issues in the body, including suppressing the immune system and digestion, hypertension, and many others. Also, U.S. Health care cost are about 17% of GDP or $2.7 trillion [2]. It’s staggering. This means that it costs about $8,508 per year per capita [2]. Of course if you have any major issues that requires hospitalization, it could be much, much more. Now here’s the good news. Qigong classes are low-cost and effective at reducing stress and improving your health, which will inevitably reduce medical costs.

What is Qigong?

Qigong is a general Chinese term for exercises, meditations and breathing techniques that are practiced daily for reducing stress, improving  and maintaining good health and promoting longevity. Qi, pronounced “chee”, is the life force or energy within all living things. While Qi is actually in everything, living and non-living, this discussion will focus on the energy within humans. Gong refers to ones ability or skill. Thus, Qigong refers to one’s Qi ability. A person that practices Qigong, develops the ability to work with and improve their own Qi, thus improving their health.

Qigong has been around for over three thousand years and  has its roots in Tradition Chinese Medicine (TCM). In fact, Qigong is often referred to as the Grandfather of TCM. There are more than 35,000 forms of Qigong around the world. According to the theory of TCM and Qigong, disease occurs in the human body when the Qi flow is disturbed (excess, deficient or blocked). The practice of Qigong will help to smooth out the flow of Qi in the body, thus restoring balance and improving one’s health.

Qigong has gotten much attention over the last 20 years or so in the U.S. and has been featured on PBS documentaries and even more recently on more mainstream shows like the Dr Oz show. According to Dr. Mehmet Oz M.D., “If you want to be healthy and live to 100, do Qigong.” One major benefit from practicing is stress reduction through relaxation. I invite you to explore Qigong with me and see for yourself what other benefits come from practicing Qigong.
